Short-Term Health Insurance in Texas: Is It Right for You in 2026?

Life changes fast. You leave a job. You age off a parent’s plan at 26. You retire early. Suddenly, you need health coverage — and you need it now, without paying full ACA premiums for just a few months. That’s where short-term health insurance enters the picture.

What Is Short-Term Health Insurance?

Short-term health insurance is a temporary plan meant to cover gaps in regular coverage. Key points: coverage length limits are set by federal and Texas rules, which have changed in recent years, so ask us what is available now; you answer health questions and pre-existing conditions are usually excluded; you can apply any time of year; premiums are often lower than unsubsidized ACA plans, but coverage is much more limited.

Important: Short-term plans are NOT ACA-compliant and do NOT count as minimum essential coverage under federal law.

What Does Short-Term Insurance Cover in Texas?

  • ✅ Emergency room visits
  • ✅ Hospitalization
  • ✅ Outpatient surgery
  • ✅ Doctor/physician visits (with limits)
  • ✅ Urgent care
  • ✅ Prescription drugs (limited, varies by plan)
  • ✅ Diagnostic testing (X-rays, lab work)

What Short-Term Insurance Does NOT Cover

  • ❌ Pre-existing conditions (any condition before enrollment is typically excluded)
  • ❌ Mental health care (most plans exclude or severely limit this)
  • ❌ Maternity care (almost always excluded)
  • ❌ Preventive care (routine physicals, screenings, vaccines)
  • ❌ Substance abuse treatment
  • ❌ ACA essential health benefits

When Does Short-Term Insurance Make Sense?

  • Between jobs: COBRA can be expensive; short-term may bridge a short gap until new employer coverage starts.
  • Aging off a parent’s plan at 26: a bridge until you get ACA or employer coverage (losing a parent’s plan usually qualifies you for an ACA Special Enrollment Period, so compare).
  • Waiting for employer benefits to start.
  • Healthy, no subsidy: if you do not qualify for ACA tax credits, short-term premiums can be lower.
  • Early retiree before Medicare: one option, though an ACA plan may be better depending on your subsidy.

How Much Does Short-Term Insurance Cost in Texas?

The Right Choice: ACA or Short-Term?

Choose ACA if: You have pre-existing conditions | You qualify for subsidies | You need mental health, maternity, or full prescription coverage | It’s open enrollment season (Nov–Jan).

Consider Short-Term if: You’re healthy with no pre-existing conditions | You need coverage for 1–6 months during a transition | You don’t qualify for ACA subsidies | You need coverage immediately.

ACA Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027. Outside open enrollment, you need a qualifying life event to enroll in ACA.
