HSA Tips for Texas Self-Employed & Small Business Owners: The Tax-Free Health Strategy

If you are self-employed in Texas and pay for your own health insurance, a Health Savings Account (HSA) paired with a qualifying high-deductible health plan (HDHP) can lower your taxes and help you save for medical costs.

What Is a Health Savings Account (HSA)?

An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account you can open if you are covered by a qualifying HDHP. Money you put in is generally tax-deductible, grows tax-free, and comes out tax-free when used for qualified medical expenses. Unused money rolls over year to year; it does not expire like many FSAs.

2026 HSA Contribution Limits

For 2026 the IRS limits are $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus $1,000 extra if you are 55 or older. For example, at a 22% federal bracket, contributing the full family amount could lower federal income tax by roughly $1,900. Texas has no state income tax.

What Qualifies as an HDHP in 2026?

What Can You Use HSA Money For?

  • ✅ Deductibles and co-pays
  • ✅ Prescription medications
  • ✅ Dental care (cleanings, fillings, crowns)
  • ✅ Vision (exams, glasses, contacts, LASIK)
  • ✅ Mental health therapy
  • ✅ Chiropractic care and acupuncture
  • ✅ Hearing aids and batteries
  • ✅ Long-term care insurance premiums
  • ✅ Medicare premiums (once you turn 65)

After age 65: Withdraw HSA funds for ANY purpose — like a traditional IRA. Non-medical withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income but not penalized, turning your HSA into a bonus retirement account.

5 Power Strategies for Texas Self-Employed

Strategy 1: contribute as much as you can. If a lump sum is not possible, monthly contributions work too (about $367 a month reaches the 2026 self-only limit; about $729 a month reaches the family limit).

Strategy 2 — Pay Small Expenses Out of Pocket: Pay small medical expenses out of pocket and save receipts. You can reimburse yourself years later — no deadline — while your HSA investment grows tax-free.

Strategy 3: consider investing. Many HSA providers let you invest once you reach a minimum balance. Investments can grow over time, but they can also lose value.

Strategy 4: combine deductions. Many self-employed people can take the self-employed health insurance deduction for their premiums, and the HSA deduction is separate. Rules and limits apply, so check with your tax advisor.

Strategy 5 — Cover All Family Members: With family HDHP coverage, your HSA can pay ANY family member’s qualified medical expenses, even if they’re not on your health plan.

HDHP + HSA vs. Traditional Plan: Real Numbers

If you are healthy and rarely use much care, an HDHP with an HSA can lower your premiums and taxes while you build savings for future medical costs. If you expect high medical costs, a plan with a lower deductible may be better. We can compare both.

Where to Open an HSA in Texas

Popular HSA custodians: Fidelity (no fees, excellent investment options), Lively (clean interface, no fees), HSA Bank (widely accepted), HealthEquity (strong investment platform). You can open an HSA as soon as your HDHP coverage begins.
