Supplemental Health Insurance in Texas: 2026 Guide

If you live in North Texas and already have health insurance, you may still face big out-of-pocket bills from deductibles, copays and coinsurance. Supplemental health insurance pays cash benefits on top of your main plan. This guide explains the main types, using facts from ManhattanLife’s 2026 brochures.

What Supplemental Health Insurance Does

Supplemental policies do not replace your health plan. They pay set amounts, usually directly to you, when a covered event happens, such as a hospital stay, an accident or a serious diagnosis. You can use the money for your deductible, household bills or anything else.

Important: supplemental policies are not major medical insurance. Benefits are fixed amounts and may be less than your actual costs, and each policy has its own limitations and exclusions.

1. Hospital Indemnity

ManhattanLife Hospital Indemnity Select pays a daily benefit if you are hospitalized. It is available for ages 18–89, guaranteed renewable for life, and guarantee issued for ages 64½ to 70. Benefits are available immediately and restore 60 days after discharge. This type of plan can help if your plan has a large hospital deductible or daily hospital copays.

2. Out-of-Pocket Protection

ManhattanLife Out-of-Pocket Protection Plan is a hospital confinement policy. According to the brochure, it pays directly to you (unless you assign benefits), pays in addition to all other insurance, and has no deductibles and no networks.

  • Hospital admission benefit (once a year): $2,500, $5,000 or $6,350
  • Daily inpatient benefit: $100 or $200 a day (up to 31 days per confinement in Texas)
  • Doctor office visit: $50, up to 2 per year
  • Optional outpatient surgery benefit: $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000, up to 2 per year
  • Optional emergency accident benefit: $250 per injury, up to 4 per year

It is conditionally renewable until you become eligible for Medicare or reach age 69. It covers complications of pregnancy but not pregnancy itself in Texas, and the daily benefit does not pay for mental/nervous disorders or substance abuse.

3. Cancer, Heart Attack and Stroke

ManhattanLife Cancer, Heart & Stroke pays a lump-sum benefit, from $5,000 to $75,000, directly to you after a covered diagnosis. Issue ages are 20–84. Heart and stroke coverage has a 30-day waiting period. See our cancer, heart attack and stroke guide.

4. Accident

ManhattanLife PAID accident coverage pays benefits for covered accidental injuries, for ages 18–84, and is guaranteed renewable. See our accident insurance guide.

5. For Employers: Group GAP

Employers can offer ManhattanLife’s Prestige Group Single Bucket GAP plan, customized to work with the company’s major medical plan. One benefit amount (from $250 up to $15,000) can be used for inpatient or outpatient covered charges. It is not HSA compatible.

If You Do Not Have Health Insurance

Supplemental policies are designed to sit on top of a main plan. If you have no coverage, start with an ACA plan (you may qualify for a subsidy), or, if that is out of reach, look at ManhattanLife Affordable Choice, a limited-benefit plan for ages 18–64. See our guide for 1099 workers.

How to Choose

  • Look at your current plan’s deductible, hospital copays and out-of-pocket maximum.
  • Ask what would hurt most financially: a hospital stay, an accident or a serious diagnosis.
  • Choose benefits that cover that gap at a price you can keep paying.

Prices depend on your age, the benefits you choose and who is covered. You can see ManhattanLife plans and apply online, or book a call and we will compare them with you.
