Finding the right health insurance for your Texas family means balancing premium, deductible, network and coverage for every person in your household. The enhanced federal subsidies of 2021–2025 have ended, so it is worth re-checking your options every year.
Texas Family Health Insurance Options in 2026
1. ACA Marketplace Plans
The ACA marketplace at Healthcare.gov is where most Texas families without employer insurance shop for coverage. Plans are available during Open Enrollment (November 1 – January 15) or after a qualifying life event. The major advantage: premium tax credits that can reduce your monthly premium dramatically or eliminate it entirely.
Tip: if your income qualifies for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR), you only get them on a Silver plan. CSR lowers deductibles and copays, so a Silver plan can work more like a Gold plan.
2. CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program)
CHIP covers Texas children in families that earn too much for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance. Income limits and costs depend on family size and income, and costs are low. Benefits include doctor visits, hospital stays, dental and vision, prescriptions, mental health care and immunizations. Check eligibility at YourTexasBenefits.com or call 211.
3. Employer-Sponsored Family Plans
If one or both parents have employer-sponsored insurance, it may be the most affordable option — but not always. The ACA fixed the family glitch in 2023: if your employer plan is unaffordable for your FAMILY, family members can qualify for marketplace subsidies. This creates new planning opportunities.
Best Texas Carriers for Families in 2026
Which insurers are available depends on your county and the year. Carriers differ in networks, drug lists, virtual care and price. We compare every Marketplace plan available to you on HealthSherpa so you can see them side by side.
5 Steps to Choosing the Right Family Plan
- Check your subsidy eligibility — see your real premium after subsidies at HealthSherpa
- Verify your doctors are in-network — especially your pediatrician, OB-GYN, and any specialists
- Calculate the true total cost — premium plus deductible plus co-pays (cheapest premium does not equal cheapest plan)
- Check prescription coverage — verify all family medications are covered on the plan formulary
- Add dental and vision for adults — ACA covers pediatric dental/vision but adults need separate plans
When Can Texas Families Enroll?
Open Enrollment 2027: November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Special Enrollment Periods apply if you lose coverage, get married, have a baby, move, or experience an income change.
